In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

If you’re looking to jump-start or advance your social work career, Walden University can give you the support you need to succeed. Walden offers high-quality social work degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level featuring degree completion options that allow you to align your educational journey with your goals and schedule. Earning your bachelor’s and master’s in social work as a working professional has never been more convenient.
If you know you want to eventually pursue an advanced degree in social work, Walden’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program is a great place to start. That’s because it can put you on the fast track to getting your Master of Social Work (MSW). Upon completion of the BSW program, students who graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to enter the MSW program’s Advanced Standing option and skip foundational courses. This can potentially reduce the time needed to complete a master’s in social work, saving time and money.
Perhaps you’re unsure about whether you will pursue your master’s in social work, but are sure you want to earn a bachelor’s in the field. In this case, moving through Walden’s BSW program is still a great option as you figure out your next steps. As long as you maintain the required GPA, you will have the ability to choose the Advanced Standing option if you decide to earn your MSW degree at Walden. And, since many social work jobs require that professionals hold an MSW, it’s good to be on track to do so even if you’re unsure about your academic and career trajectory.
Students in Walden’s MSW program have two additional degree completion options. The Traditional option limits the workload to just one or two courses per term. This option is ideal for working professionals who want to balance their master’s in social work program with other life commitments. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Fast Track option. Because most terms will include three courses, this option is best for individuals who can dedicate full time to their studies and coursework. Though all program options require adequate time and dedication, the Fast Track option is the strongest commitment.
At Walden, you have options. In the CSWE-accredited Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs, you can develop the in-demand skills and credentials you need to make a difference in the lives of clients and impact the field. And at Walden, an accredited university, you can earn your degree online while you continue to work full time. That means you don’t have to put your social work career on hold while you further your knowledge and experience. With online learning, there’s no need to completely rearrange your schedule—you can complete coursework at whatever time of day works best for you as you study for your BSW and/or MSW degree and prepare to become a licensed social worker.
Walden University is an accredited institution offering a suite of social work degree programs online, including a Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work. Expand your career options and earn your degree using a convenient, flexible learning platform that fits your busy life./em>

Accreditation
Walden’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Board of Accreditation (BOA), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Accreditation of a baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral social work program by the BOA indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of program quality evaluated through a peer review process. An accredited program has sufficient resources to meet its mission and goals and the BOA has verified that it demonstrates compliance with all sections of the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). Accreditation provides reasonable assurance about the quality of the program and the competence of students graduating from the program.
Note on Licensure
The Walden University Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program is designed to prepare graduates to practice as licensed social workers in states that offer licensure at the bachelor’s level. However, each state board responsible for the regulation of social work has its own requirements for licensure, including appropriate accreditation of academic programs.

Note on Licensure
The Walden University Master of Social Work (MSW) program is designed to prepare graduates to practice as licensed social workers in many states. However, the requirements for licensure as a social worker vary greatly from state to state. Each state board that is responsible for regulating the practice of social work has its own academic requirements and issues its own license to practice as a social worker in that state. Additionally, students should be advised that the Walden MSW program is not designed or intended to prepare graduates for licensure as a school social worker; however, graduates might be eligible for licensure as a school social worker in their particular state of residence.
While Walden Enrollment Specialists can provide general information relating to the state-by-state educational requirements for social work licensure or certification, it remains the student’s responsibility to understand, evaluate, and comply with all requirements relating to field education experiences, licensing or certification, authorization, or endorsement for the state in which she or he resides. Walden makes no representations or guarantee that completion of its coursework or programs will permit an individual to obtain state licensure, certification, authorization, endorsement, or other state credential. Licensure eligibility determinations are ultimately determined by the appropriate state board that issues the credential to practice.
