In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Discover career opportunities in your area that match your interests.
If your interests lie in helping to prepare for and cope with disasters, the emergency management career path is for you. Emergency managers are called on in crises such as tornadoes, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, toxic spills, hurricanes, and floods. They also help protect vulnerable civilians in war-torn areas. Working with law enforcement and government agencies, these professionals coordinate responses when disaster strikes. This often means organizing rescue missions, ensuring that shelters are available for local residents, and ordering evacuations.
A large part of the job also focuses on emergency preparedness. That is, making sure that adequate resources and training are in place before disaster hits. Emergency managers will make sure that all responders have sufficient training and that response plans are adequate for any situation that may arise. In addition, they conduct threat and risk assessments to aid in the planning for a disaster.
Many managers have extensive educational and work experience in related fields. For example, they may have worked in law enforcement or fire safety. They may also have undergraduate disaster planning, public administration, or public safety degrees.
If you wish to lead disaster prevention and relief efforts, a master’s in criminal justice with a specialization in emergency management could help you reach that goal. And if you have a busy work or home life and do not want to enroll in a full-time, campus-based program, you may want to consider online colleges, which can provide you with the freedom to complete your coursework at home at any time of the day or night.
Walden University offers an MS in Criminal Justice degree program with a specialization in Emergency Management degree program that can help you develop the skills to lead response efforts, enhance public policy, and protect communities from natural and human-made disasters. In short, it will prepare you to lead before and after a crisis occurs.
