How long does it take to complete the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program?
Counselors are trained to serve people in a variety of settings such as schools, communities, clinics, hospitals, and businesses. Walden’s MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program provides the academic training that students need to pursue licensure as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) or its equivalent. Licensed counselors work with individuals, families, and groups to help clients manage and overcome emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. Clinical mental health counselors may seek a license to practice independently in all 50 states after completing a master’s degree program and meeting any other state requirements.
The counseling programs at Walden are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling curriculum is designed to provide students with the academic preparation to seek licensure as professional counselors (licensed professional counselor or equivalent). Each state has its own licensing board that regulates the practice of counseling. Students should consult their state licensure board for details about: educational requirements, supervised clinical hours, application process, exam requirements (e.g., NCE, NCMHCE), and continuing education requirements.
At least 100 hours of practicum and 600 hours of internship are required for this program. Walden is committed to providing students with resources and support in preparation of field experience. To help ease anxiety about the field experience process, Walden offers a 0-credit Field Experience Preparation course, a structured experience that guides students through the application process and currently available readiness resources.
All of Walden’s counseling programs are CACREP accredited. CACREP accreditation gives students peace of mind that the program they are enrolling in meets content and quality standards set by the profession. Additionally, in many states, CACREP accreditation is a requirement for licensure.
