Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Becoming an elementary school teacher is a noble goal, for as a U.S. child advocacy organization reports, it is teachers who provide a critical element that children need in order to succeed in life: a quality education that begins in early childhood.
America’s Promise Alliance, a coalition of nonprofit, business, community, and government organizations working to improve outcomes for children, says education is one of the “Five Promises” society must make to children—and deliver on.
“We promise to young Americans that they will grow up with the help and guidance of caring adult relationships, healthy childhoods, safe surroundings, effective education, and opportunities to serve others,” the organization explains on its website. “When at least four of these promises are at work in young people’s lives, they are more likely to succeed academically, socially, and civically.”
Students in Walden University’s BS in Elementary Education (Teacher Licensure) online degree program read about the Five Promises in the course Collaboration to Support All Learners. Bachelor’s degree students examine collaboration strategies that promote the growth and learning of all children in the elementary school classroom, including those with exceptionalities, gifted and talented students, and English language learners.
Walden education degree candidates also examine the role of the school in supporting all learners within the larger community context. They identify factors in the students’ environments that may affect their growth and learning, and explore strategies for effective collaboration with diverse families.
“America’s Promise Alliance is devoted to helping to create the conditions for success for all young people, including the millions currently being left behind,” the organization says.
