Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Minneapolis—August 21, 2018— Walden University, a pioneer in online education, is introducing a new competency-based pathway for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) Completion Program through Tempo Learning®, its custom-paced educational experience for students who want to earn a degree on their terms.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15% from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Walden's Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)-accredited RN-BSN Completion Program is helping to meet the demand by preparing students through the new competency-based format, with the potential to accelerate their learning and reduce the cost of the degree. Competencies cover subjects such as evidence-based nursing, leadership and informatics, healthcare policy, individual and population-focused interventions, quality improvement, ethics, and patient-centered nursing care.
“Our new competency-based RN-BSN program will enable nurses to apply the in-depth experience they acquire on the job toward earning their degree, with the online flexibility that working adults need,” said Dr. Karen Ouzts, program director for Walden University’s RN-BSN Completion Program. “There has been an increased emphasis on advancing nursing education, and Walden University is proud to offer various programs and learning options for one of the most in-demand professions.”
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs at Walden University are also accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (www.ccneaccreditation.org). The nursing programs at Walden are designed to help students use evidence-based practice to enhance patient care and develop leadership skills.
Tempo Learning is composed of competencies and rigorous assessments that have been designed by faculty and validated by employers—creating a direct link between education and the workplace. Students receive individualized help from faculty members and academic coaches while working on their own to pass assessments designed to reflect the needs of the workplace. Successful students can demonstrate their learning and potentially speed progress toward earning their degree.
Walden was one of only six institutions approved by the U.S. government to offer direct assessment competency-based education. Walden’s Tempo Learning launched in 2015 with the competency-based MS in Early Childhood Studies. Other competency-based programs include the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA).
