Walden University Introduces Online Doctor of Public Administration

Minneapolis—November 21, 2016—Walden University is now offering a Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) program, an online professional doctoral program designed for experienced practitioners who want to advance their analytical, leadership, and management skills in public administration.

Walden DPA students can learn how to develop effective leadership and management skills that are used in the public sector, as well as how to assess solutions to practical problems in public administration using evidence-based practices and research. The curriculum focuses on the application of ethical concepts of public administration within organizations, and using culturally sensitive research to impact policies at local, state, national and international levels of government to meet the needs of diverse populations.

“Our communities are facing new, old and cascading challenges in government, the public sector and nonprofit arenas,” said Dr. Shana Garrett, dean of the School of Public Policy and Administration. “Walden’s DPA program helps to prepare graduates who can bring much-needed change and innovation to public sector organizations, agencies and nonprofits that have the power to make a difference in the lives of their community members.”

Walden’s DPA program includes academic residencies to provide students opportunities to connect with faculty and peers during sessions that are designed to enhance the curriculum. The team-based experience will give students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned to real-world case studies and recommend practical solutions to issues that impact people and communities. Based on the charrette model, this new approach to Walden’s residency requirement means students will be fully immersed in a real-world scenario for a four-day period, collaborating to work on effective problem-solving, network and develop new skills.

DPA students will have the option to participate in the General Program or one of 12 specializations, including: Criminal Justice; Emergency Management; Geographic Information Systems; Global Leadership; Health Policy; Homeland Security Policy and Coordination; International Nongovernmental Organizations; Law and Public Policy; Local Government Management for Sustainable Communities; Nonprofit Management and Leadership; Policy Analysis; and Terrorism, Mediation, and Peace.

In addition to the DPA program, Walden’s School of Public Policy and Administration offers a PhD in Public Policy and Administration, Master of Public Policy (MPP), and Master of Public Administration (MPA), as well as graduate certificates in criminal justice, government management, homeland security, nonprofit management, public policy, public management and leadership, and strategic planning and public policy.
