Online degrees focused on preparing professionals to meet demands in cyber security, emergency management, public policy and administration
Minneapolis—June 23, 2014—The U.S. Department of Homeland Security employs more than 240,000 people whose job it is to protect Americans from a wide range of threats—from natural disasters and terrorist attacks to cyber attacks and other emergencies. Homeland security positions are increasingly available outside of the Department of Homeland Security in other federal, state or local agencies as well as private and nonprofit organizations around the world.
The expanding field of homeland security is dynamic and diverse, offering career opportunities across many disciplines including emergency management, cyber security, criminal justice, public policy and leadership and management. To help prepare professionals to meet the demand in these growing fields, Walden University offers a portfolio of online degree program options to support a variety of homeland security career paths.
“Every week seems to bring a new headline of a major information systems breach, natural disaster or man-made threat that creates uncertainty, alarm and anxiety for our citizens. Whether they are dealing with high-profile issues of cyber security, emergency response or terrorism or are working behind the scenes in mediation, public administration or criminal justice, today’s homeland security professionals must have the skills and insights to prepare for the most likely scenarios and situations as well as the unexpected,” said Dr. Ronald Craig, criminal justice and emergency management program director in the School of Public Policy and Administration.
For example, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the demand for criminal justice and security professionals is greater than ever before. With an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 open positions in the U.S., cyber security is one of the few fields in this country with 0% unemployment, according to the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium 2013 (ISC)2 Global Information Security Workforce Study.
To help prepare professionals for careers in criminal justice, Walden offers the PhD in Criminal Justice, MS in Criminal Justice and MS in Criminal Justice Leadership and Executive Management. Other programs with high relevance to homeland security include the MS in Emergency Management, Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Public Policy (MPP) and PhD in Public Policy and Administration. Walden’s Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) also includes a new homeland security specialization.
“I personally feel advanced interdisciplinary learning is central to the security mindset. Embracing this, up to and including doctoral studies, not only tests one’s current expertise but continually pushes it to new areas—and ever increasing levels—of excellence,” said Gregory Hood, Walden PhD in Management student and performance management chief, U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security, Office of the Chief Technology Officer, from Arlington, Va.
Walden is offering millions of dollars in grants, scholarships and tuition assistance to help students achieve their goal of advancing their education when they start their program in 2014.
