Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Minneapolis—August 8, 2013—In an increasingly digital, social and mobile marketplace, professionals with high-level communication skills are in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the fields of public relations, advertising, promotions, marketing management and technical writing will experience above-average growth in the decade ending in 2020. To help equip professionals to meet this demand, Walden University is introducing an online MS in Communication degree program to give students a professional edge in the dynamic, fast-paced field of communication.
“According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the No. 1 skill desired by employers is communication. We can also see from countless studies and from experience that those with effective communication skills are selected for management or roles of responsibility. Walden’s M.S. in Communication program is unique, completely online, with integrated opportunities to explore emerging communication technologies as well practical, real-world applications of effective communication skills, said Dr. Allyson Gee, program director for the MS in Communication.
Walden’s online MS in Communication program prepares students to craft compelling messages for local, national and global audiences and translate that messaging into different media. Through real-world scenarios and projects, students will learn how to effectively develop, execute and measure integrated communication strategies, using both traditional and innovative channels.
The master’s degree program features digital tools such as downloads, videos and podcasts to help illustrate communication concepts and give students hands-on experience with the latest media channels. Students have the opportunity to create a robust electronic portfolio of work that they can present to prospective employers. Students also complete a capstone project that allows them to apply the skills and knowledge gained throughout their program to a real-world situation.
Walden’s M.S. in Communication program offers an embedded Graduate Certificate in Communication, which students are eligible to receive after completing the first four courses. The program joins the suite of programs offered in the School of Management, including the BS in Communication and the BS in Business Communication.
