Walden University Announces Nurses of the Year Scholarships

More than $200,000 in scholarships to be awarded to nurses making a difference

Minneapolis—May 9, 2013—In recognition of National Nurses Week, and to help nurses worldwide make a greater impact in their organizations and their fields, Walden University is offering nine nursing scholarships totaling more than $200,000.

Three full-tuition and six $10,000 Nurses of the Year Scholarships will be awarded to registered nurses who are making a positive difference in the lives of their patients, their organizations and the future of nursing.

The scholarships include:

  • Nursing Advocate Scholarships, awarded to new students enrolling in the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)–accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing(BSN) Completion Program who have made a positive difference in the life of a patient, a healthcare organization or the practice of nursing.
  • Nursing Leader Scholarships, awarded to new students enrolling in the CCNE-accredited Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program who have made a positive difference in the life of a patient, a healthcare organization or the practice of nursing.
  • Nursing Visionary Scholarships, awarded to new students enrolling in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program who have used their leadership skills to advance the practice of nursing, augment healthcare delivery or improve patient outcomes.

“Receiving a scholarship to pursue a DNP at Walden allows me the opportunity to advance my knowledge and career. The experience has already helped me recognize the importance of evidence-based practice and increased my knowledge of how to interpret data,” said Michele Williams, recipient of a full-tuition Nurse of the Year DNP scholarship last year and pain/palliative care specialist and clinical coordinator at Shore Health System in Easton, Md.

The scholarships, which reflect Walden’s social change mission and its commitment to providing access to quality higher education, are available to nurses who enroll as new students in Walden’s nursing programs for any start date from September through December 2013. Those applying for scholarships must submit an essay on how they made a difference, one letter of recommendation from a supervisor, a résumé/CV and official transcripts. In addition to these scholarships, Walden is offering two free continuing education courses, Florence Nightingale: Connecting her legacy with local-to-global health today and Child Abuse, designed in a self-study format and available until July 2.
