Walden University Ranked Second Among Universities Awarding Doctorates to African Americans

Minneapolis—February 24, 2011—According to data recently released from the National Science Foundation, the 2009 Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) listed Walden University as No. 2 in the category of doctorate-granting institutions with the largest number of African-American doctorate recipients.

The SED, an annual census of individuals who have received research doctoral degrees from accredited U.S. institutions, gathers information about these individuals’ educational histories, funding sources and post-doctoral plans. The survey findings help identify trends in doctoral education and support efforts to improve the country’s doctoral education system. The SED is conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago for the National Science Foundation and five other federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education.

In addition to the SED ranking, Walden is consistently recognized by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education as a top provider of graduate degree programs for African Americans. In its 2010 Top 100 Degree Producers: Graduate and Professional, for African Americans students, Walden was No. 2 for master’s degrees in health professions and related clinical sciences; No. 4 in education; and No. 3 for doctoral degrees in business, management and marketing.
