Walden University Puts Its Mission into Action with Global Day of Service on Oct. 3

Minneapolis—October 1, 2009—From Atlanta, Detroit and Los Angeles to Amsterdam, San Luis Potosí, Mexico and Kathmandu, Nepal, Walden University will put its mission of effecting positive social change into action during its annual Global Day of Service on October 3, 2009. Nearly 2,000 student, alumni, faculty and staff volunteers will join together to serve in 40 community projects across the country and internationally, and are expected to contribute almost 5,000 hours of service.

“This year’s Global Day of Service illustrates the worldwide impact Walden students, alumni, staff and faculty make as agents of social change. Every day, many people in the Walden community are actively involved in service and other volunteer work, putting people and action behind Walden’s social change mission. Our Global Day of Service is one way we focus that energy,” said Jonathan A. Kaplan, president of Walden University.

Service projects in the United States include painting, cleaning and repairing schools in Atlanta, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego; tutoring students in Atlanta, Cleveland and Jacksonville; working in food banks in Boston, Houston, Miami, New York and Washington, D.C.; helping out in the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago and Charleston, W.Va; painting and repairing community centers in Minneapolis and Detroit; and participating in nonprofit fundraisers in Philadelphia and Seattle.

Members of the Walden community will also help rebuild a house in New Orleans, repair and clean a church in Savannah, Ga., volunteer at a YMCA Family Festival in Las Vegas, assist with a motivational day at the Battered Women’s Foundation in Dallas, deliver school supplies to a school in Jacksonville and lead residents in activities in a Chicago nursing facility.

Internationally, the Walden community is joining service projects in Amsterdam, Bermuda, Honduras, Nepal and Panama, and in the Mexican cities of Hermosillo, Lago de Guadalupe, Lomas Verdes, Mexicali, Nogales, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tlalpan and Toluca.
