Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Minneapolis—September 6, 2007—Walden University, an accredited online institution, has launched an online, peer-reviewed journal that focuses on interdisciplinary research and practice between the social, behavioral and health sciences. Designed to encourage the exchange of ideas between researchers and practitioners in these distinct, yet connected, disciplines, the Journal of Social, Behavioral and Health Sciences, is seeking papers for its first issue, which will be published in December.
In an era in which the focus of many journals is becoming increasingly narrow, this journal will fill a key niche as a forum for the dissemination of research that intersects social, behavioral and health sciences. “We believe that the Journal of Social, Behavioral and Health Sciences can encourage new models of interdisciplinary collaboration that will provide new ways of addressing complex social problems,” said Dr. George Smeaton, editor of the journal and assistant dean for research and evaluation in Walden’s College of Social, Behavioral and Health Sciences. “In addition, we hope to stimulate a dialogue that will foster further integration of research with practice.”
The Journal of Social, Behavioral and Health Sciences’ peer-reviewed articles will be an essential resource for graduate students, scholars and practitioners in the fields that serve the framework of our society, including psychology, public health, nursing, human services, criminal justice, social work and sociology. The journal is seeking submissions from individuals in these fields as well as other fields in the social, behavioral and health sciences for its first issue. Submissions are due Oct. 1 to be considered for the inaugural edition.
In addition to Dr. Smeaton, the journal’s associate editors include Walden faculty member Dr. Cynthia Lanier; Dr. Kathy Evans of the University of South Carolina; Dr. James Greenstone of the American College of Forensic Examiners International; and Dr. Victor Lofgreen of Criminal Justice Data Services, Inc.
