Walden University Celebrates 35-Year Anniversary, Creates Center for Social Change

Minneapolis—May 6, 2005—Underscoring its long-held commitment to social change, Walden University, an accredited online institution celebrating its 35th anniversary, has created the Center for Social Change, a new university publication entitled the Journal of Social Change and Walden's first conference on social change, set to take place in Baltimore, Md., later this year. This week, Walden University President Paula E. Peinovich, PhD, will award the President’s Award for Leadership in Social Change to the Theatre de la Jeune Lune in recognition of its role in raising awareness of important societal issues through its unique theatrical expression.

Walden University’s Social Change Award bestowed to Theatre de la Jeune Lune

On Friday, May 6, Walden University will present Theatre de la Jeune Lune with a social change award at the theatre in Minneapolis prior to a private performance of “The Little Prince.” On hand to receive the award will be Jeune Lune Artistic Directors Robert Rosen and Vincent Gracieux.

“This is an exciting time for Walden as we celebrate both our history and our future as a university founded on a mission of effecting positive social change,” said Peinovich. “Jeune Lune has taken their own unique approach to theatre and uses the arts as a means to deliver important themes and statements.” The award presentation is part of a series of 2005 events sponsored by Walden, as it marks 35 years of providing quality higher education at a distance.

Walden University’s Ongoing Commitment to Social Change

Walden University will host its first Social Change conference this October in Baltimore, Md. The conference will showcase the university’s 35-year commitment to social change, provide a forum for those doing research in the area, as well as launch the Walden Center for Social Change, the Walden Journal of Social Change and the university’s Fellowship in Research and Applications for Social Change.

The Walden Center for Social Change is a virtual, multidisciplinary home for Walden faculty, students and alumni who are actively conducting research on and implementing initiatives for social change. Walden’s Journal of Social Change is a journal devoted to theory and applied research on social change that improves the human condition and progresses people, groups, organizations, cultures, and society toward a more positive future.

The Fellowship in Research and Applications for Social Change was established to enable members of the Walden community to make a significant and meaningful change in academic and social communities, both locally and globally. The Fellowship will be awarded to the applicant(s) who submit outstanding proposals reflective of Walden’s mission and determination to uniquely effect positive social change worldwide.
