From elementary school to the university level, bullying and discriminatory treatment of sexual minorities - especially transgender students - remains an issue for education professionals, due to the increased risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidality of LGBTQ youth. For transgender students, however, the concerns are compounded by the challenges they face in crafting a valid sense of identity during a critical period of emotional, psychological, physical, and social growth. Dr. Laurel Walsh and Dr. Kevin Schwandt address approaches to improving the educational climate for transgender students, ranging from adoption of gender-neutral language and acknowledging preferred pronouns to identifying risk factors for suicidality.
