Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Psychology is a popular choice for a degree program—in fact, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, psychology is the fifth most popular among college majors, with more than 100,000 bachelor’s degrees granted in the subject in 2021–2022.1 While a bachelor’s degree in psychology can help build foundational skills useful for further study in psychology or related disciplines, it also supports transferable skill development relevant across a range of professional settings.
Psychology, the study of the mind and behavior, helps us better understand ourselves and others . This background can prove to be relevant for many careers.
And, while psychology graduates gain hard skills such as research and statistics, a bachelor’s degree in psychology also helps develop one’s soft skills, or people skills. These include the ability to communicate well and think critically and analytically. Research highlighted by the Harvard Business Review suggests that skills such as collaboration and adaptability are important for long term career mobility and resilience.2
While a BS in Psychology is great preparation for advanced studies in the discipline, it’s also a relevant precursor to advanced degrees in many related fields, including education, social work, law, medicine, and the life sciences. The skills acquired in a psychology degree program can translate to career paths other than clinical practice. The skills you develop—understanding human behavior, analyzing data, and communicating effectively—are valuable across many industries.
For example, teachers could use psychology to understand student motivation and learning styles. Marketing professionals might apply behavioral insights to understand consumer decision-making. Human resources specialists often rely on psychological principles for team building.
