In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Sonya DiCiro, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, has been a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner since 1997. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri–St. Louis and completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice at Walden University. Sonya began her nursing career in 1983 after graduating from an associate degree nursing program. She later earned her BSN and MSN while working as a Registered Nurse and raising her family. She currently holds RN and APRN licenses in Missouri, Minnesota, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
Sonya practices part-time in public health, specializing in contraception and women’s health in rural southeast Missouri. Her clinical work focuses on delivering accessible reproductive care and education to underserved communities, with a strong emphasis on prevention and patient empowerment. With extensive experience as a clinical preceptor for nurse practitioner students, Sonya now serves as a full-time faculty member at Walden University. She has taught a range of courses, including Primary Care of Adults Across the Lifespan, Care of Older Adults, Advanced Nursing Reproductive Care, and Synthesis of Advanced Practice. Known for her compassionate and student-centered approach, she is committed to helping future nurses build strong clinical reasoning skills and a deep understanding of patient care.
Sonya also serves on the board of Recycling Grace, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women overcome addiction and rebuild their lives. She contributes her expertise to the board of Caring Hands, a nonprofit clinic that provides care to underserved populations.
Outside of her professional roles, Sonya enjoys gardening, photography, traveling, and spending time with her family. She is a proud wife, mother of three, and grandmother of three. Sonya views nursing as a calling and is honored to play a role in shaping the next generation of nurses.
