In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Sheila L. Whitener received her Doctorate in Nursing Practice at Frontier Nursing University in December 2012. Dr. Whitener earned a Post-Graduate Certificate at Frontier Nursing University in 2019, and a Master’s in Nursing at Emory University in 2000. She earned a BSN in 1984 and a B.A. in Social Work in 1981 at Brenau University. She has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at North Georgia Technical College since 2021, Adjunct Professor at Liberty University since 2020, Adjunct Instructor at Rasmussen University since 2020, Clinical Preceptor at Frontier Nursing University since 2017, and Clinical Preceptor at University of North Georgia since 2010. Dr. Whitener began as Clinical Faculty at Walden University in February 2022. She has taught nursing from undergraduate to graduate level. Dr. Whitener holds professional certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife with the AMCB and is dual board certified as Nurse Practitioner with AANP and ANCC. She holds RN and APRN licensure in Georgia, Tennessee, and Minnesota. She has pending publication and several presentations on neonatal and pediatric care. Professionally, Dr. Whitener practices as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Family Nurse Practitioner in Family Practice and in Hospice and Palliative Care.
