In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Shanna Barnett is a Core Faculty member in Public Health in the College of Health Science. She joined Walden University in 2013. Dr. Barnett received a Bachelor's degree at the University of Wyoming in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Texas Woman’s University and a Masters and a Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Prior to joining Walden University, Dr. Barnett served as Associate Director of Research Planning and Development at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in the Department of Health Disparities Research. Dr. Barnett also worked as a researcher, assisting with community-based participatory research as the Director of the Administrative Core for the Center for Community Engaged-Translational Research.
Dr. Barnett currently resides in Houston, Texas however she is originally from Wyoming and her love for and passion of anything rural has always been the driving force behind her work and mentoring. Dr. Barnett’s primary research interests are around various issues in rural public health and rural health care. These interests span local and international locations. Her doctoral mentee topics have ranged from access to cancer treatments in rural areas of Oklahoma looking at tornado preparedness among Spanish speaking rural residents, infertility knowledge and resources in rural Michigan, as well as access to kidney dialysis in Nigeria and malaria prevention in rural areas of Liberia. As a scholar-practitioner she has experience in healthcare management, health economics and finance, and health policy.
