In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Sarah Banks has been a nurse for more than 21 years. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Piedmont University in Demorest, Georgia, a Master's in Nursing Education from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Nursing Leadership from The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Dr. Banks' professional affiliations include Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, Society of Collegiate Leadership and Achievement, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She is also a member of the North Carolina Public Health Association and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Haywood Health Foundation. Dr. Banks is also a 2026 Presidential Leadership Scholar.
Dr. Banks nursing experience includes nursing education, administration, acute care, emergency medicine, hospice, pediatric care management, and public health. She currently serves as one of 86 Health Directors in the state of North Carolina and was recently the recipient of the Ron Levine Public Health Award.
