In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Samantha Franke, MSW, DSW LCSW, is a private practice clinical social worker currently licensed in both Vermont and New York State. Dr. Franke held a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Morgan State University in 1998 and completed her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a clinical specialization from the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 1999. Dr. Franke completed her Doctorate in Social Work in 2018 through Walden University College Social and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Franke is currently a participant in the Post-Doctoral Walden Fellowship Program as an instructor for doctoral social work students. Dr. Franke has been active in clinical social work since 1998 serving both adults and children in several states that include Virginia, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. In her private practice, Dr. Franke has provided countless individuals with access to mental health services and tools to empower those in her care. In recent years, Dr. Franke has focused on action research that explores the barriers faced by clinical social workers who provide substance use services for rural young adults that reside in Delaware County, New York. Within her community, Dr. Franke has served on the executive board of directors for the United Way of Sidney New York and served to gather educational information for the Tri-Town Coalition on Substance Use Prevention (COSAP). While COSAP is no longer operating, the mission of COSAP was to reduce and prevent substance use through awareness, education and community action within local rural upstate New York communities. During the final years of COSAP, worked tirelessly to advocate to help reverse the New York State Insurance Law for social workers that limited social workers from accepting insurance for therapy services that took place in 2023. Dr. Franke is passionate about child advocacy and in her community has volunteered time to the Tri-Town Youth Club and also served as a youth mentor for Catholic Charities. In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors, gardening, and cooking. Dr. Franke also enjoys spending quality time with her three amazing sons.
