Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Richard (Rick) Hammett, Ed.D. is Managing Principal of Emotional Intelligence Learning Systems, Inc. (EILS). EILS is an education, training, consulting, research, and publishing concern dedicated to building healthy and effective individuals, schools, organizations, and communities.
Rick’s professional philosophy provides for positive and personally meaningful change, best achieved through a person-centered coaching perspective that includes the transformative emotional intelligence (EI) approach of Nelson and Low (1977 – present). In his work with clients, students, and colleagues Rick integrates the Emotional Learning System (ELS) (Nelson & Low, 2003) with EILS’s family of proprietary positive assessment instruments to model and teach emotional intelligence, personal skills, and leadership development.
Throughout his 28-year career in the U.S. Navy, Rick’s own transformations were facilitated through important relationships and professional growth milestones that culminated with a commission as an Ensign in the unrestricted line (surface warfare) followed by 18 more years of service. After retiring from the Navy he received his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University-Kingsville where his studies and research concentrated on the personal excellence model of emotional intelligence, adult education, counseling, and coaching.
