In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Phyllis D. Morgan, PhD, FNP-BC, FAANP, is a nationally recognized nurse leader, educator, and scholar-practitioner dedicated to advancing health equity. She has practiced as a Family Nurse Practitioner for more than twenty-six years and has over two decades of experience in nursing higher education. Dr. Morgan is the first graduate of the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program at Hampton University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), where she cultivated a deep commitment to culturally responsive education and improving health outcomes for underserved communities.
Dr. Morgan is a Professor in the College of Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Walden University, where she has held multiple leadership roles. As a Subject Matter Expert, she contributes to course development, curriculum innovation, and program advancement, helping prepare advanced practice nurses to lead in today’s complex and rapidly evolving healthcare environments. She has authored numerous publications and has presented her scholarly work at national and international conferences.
Dr. Phyllis D. Morgan is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and was a member of the inaugural cohort of the National League for Nursing Social Determinants of Health and Social Change Leadership Institute. Also, she was selected for the 2026–2027 cohort of the Dr. Gloria J. McNeal Leadership and Public Policy Mentoring Fellowship through the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Inc. Through her work, she remains committed to empowering nurses to influence healthcare systems and advance equitable care for diverse populations. Outside of her professional work, Dr. Morgan enjoys practicing yoga, meditation, and alignment fitness classes to support her physical and mental well-being.
