Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Paula Vaughan is a humanities professional and contributing faculty member within the College of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Studies (CIUS) teaching humanities and general education courses. Paula has been authoring, developing, and instructing asynchronous undergraduate and honors humanities classes for diverse adult learners since 2013 using Canvas and Brightspace learning management systems. She is currently a voting member of the CIUS Curriculum and Academic Policy (CAP) committee serving for a two-year term.
Paula earned her Master of Humanities with distinction from Tiffin University, with a concentration in multicultural studies. She graduated summa cum laude from Oglethorpe University with a Bachelor of Arts and an independently planned major in world mythologies and cultural anthropology.
Paula earned her graduate degree online, profoundly benefiting from the structured, welcoming distance learning classroom. Through her graduate online program, she enjoyed firsthand the global engagement and discovery of new cultures and ethnicities and the gifts these associations yield. As such, she is committed to online teaching, extending her positive remote learning experience to others through a culture of care, creating a supportive, inclusive educational space celebrating the beauty of humanity’s diversity.
In addition to higher education instruction, Paula previously worked with gifted students in her local homeschooling community creating original curricula and teaching small-size, hands-on courses about nature and the humanities. Paula’s experience working with young people grades K-12 inspired her to create the Sharing Story Learning Series, handcrafted printable curricula and creative writing prompts honoring children’s emotional and social intelligence through visionary thinking and reflective composition.
Paula’s research interests include women’s voice in global fairy tales; the hero/ine quests in literature and film; initiatory ritual structure and events; world mythologies; and supernatural folklore connecting ancestry and landscape.
Paula loves art in all forms and sharing humanity’s storytelling genius with her students. Teaching for her is about facilitation, equipping people with academic and personal knowledge to help make decisions that are meaningful to the individual while celebrating their connection with humanity.
