In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Slater is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). She received her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Counselor Education from the University of Florida, with a specialization in Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention. She has over 23 years of clinical experience and 20 years of experience teaching, training, and supervising master’s level counseling practitioners. Dr. Slater taught in graduate counseling programs at the University of Florida, University of North Florida, and Argosy University before coming onboard with Walden, in 2010, as Contributing Faculty. Dr. Slater has provided crisis intervention, victim advocacy, and counseling services in a variety of settings and served on the planning and development committee for the North Central Florida Regional Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), implementing a tri-county training program for law enforcement officers. She worked as the Clinical Director of a large, nationwide Employee Assistance Program before accepting a Core Faculty position at Walden in 2014.
Currently, Dr. Slater maintains a private practice caseload. She works with individuals, couples, and families, who are struggling with a variety of concerns such as depression, stress, coping skills, behavioral change, anxiety, relationship issues, spirituality, and trauma. Her clinical work focuses on holistic healing and frequently includes existential, solution-focused, and cognitive-behavioral strategies. She completed the Level 1 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and is a Board Certifed-TeleMental Health Provider (BC-TMH). Dr. Slater maintains a commitment to community education and outreach, designed to increase awareness of the importance of crisis and suicide training, prevention, and intervention. She has spoken at numerous local, regional and national conferences and organizations on crisis intervention and various topics related to mental health and wellness.
