Dr. Hussey received her PhD from the University of North Texas in Higher Education and Administration with a focus on Gerontology. Her research focused on medication knowledge and compliance in the illiterate/low literacy elderly, chronic heart failure and quality of life, as well as instrumentation development. She has maintained a research interest in chronic disease and quality of life and health literacy. Dr. Hussey earned her MSN at the University Northern Illinois as a cardiovascular/respiratory clinical nurse specialist and a BSN from Purdue University as a nurse practitioner. Her clinical practice was in cardiovascular intensive care. Dr. Hussey began her academic career began in 1982 as a faculty member at the University of Northern Illinois. She has held tenured faculty positions at several universities where her main teaching and clinical focus was intensive care nursing. Her background includes developing the curriculum and implementing a dual clinical focus in Adult Nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she served as Chair of the Adult Health Nursing Department. Dr. Hussey has also developed an on-line doctoral program and has held other administrative positions. She continues to publish on health literacy and conduct research in chronic illness. She has experience in curriculum and program design, development, and implementation which includes MSN level, practitioner and doctoral programs.
