In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Kimberley D. Mercer, Ph.D., LCSW, MSW is a 30-year career professional in the field of clinical social work practice. Dr. Mercer holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Human Services from Capella University. In 1992, she became licensed by the Virginia Board of Health Professional (Board of Social Work) as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). In 2018, she became trained in Trauma-Focus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Dr. Mercer is an independent contractor for clinical services. Dr. Mercer is a skilled clinician, program administrator, and entrepreneur. For the past 20 years, Dr. Mercer has been managing therapeutic programs and services for children, youth and families. Also, during these years, she has supervised master level social work student internships and provided clinical supervision to individual seeking LCSW licensure in the state of Virginia. Dr. Mercer works diligently in assisting students in transitioning theory to practice during their field experience. Currently, Dr. Mercer is a Clinical Practice and Education Specialist for Mental Health Service Line at Children’s Hospital of The Kings Daughters. Her primary focus is clinical education and student training. She is also a Contributing Instructor in the College of Social and Behavioral Science at Walden University.
