In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Kim A. Critchlow is a third-generation doctor, following in the footsteps of her mother, Dr. Norma L. Mayfield, and her maternal grandfather, Dr. Alfred Stewart. In recognition of her professional and scholarly contributions, Dr. Critchlow was named a 2024 Honored Listee in Who’s Who in America.
Dr. Critchlow has devoted more than 25 years to higher education as both a faculty member and administrator. She has taught extensively in the areas of business, leadership, and psychology and currently serves as an Associate Professor, Academic Program Coordinator, and member of the leadership team for the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program in the College of Management and Human Potential at Walden University.
In her leadership role, Dr. Critchlow introduced the Pragmatic Inquiry (QPI) research design into the DBA program, serves as a subject matter expert, supervises adjunct faculty, and mentors doctoral students. She plays an integral role in supporting the program’s transformational and continuous improvement processes. In 2024 and 2025, Dr. Critchlow successfully graduated a combined 26 doctoral students, and she is on track to graduate a comparable number in 2026 using a doctoral mentoring framework she developed in 2024.
Dr. Critchlow is deeply engaged in doctoral scholarship. She has co-published 14 peer-reviewed journal articles with her doctoral graduates, with six additional manuscripts accepted, under review, or in development, anticipated for publication within the next 30 to 120 days. She is a strong advocate for DBA students, regularly teaches research and doctoral residency courses, and has served as Chair on two College committees.
Prior to and concurrent with her academic career, Dr. Critchlow has accumulated broad professional and leadership experience across multiple industries. She has led organizational restructuring initiatives in response to social and regulatory change and has held leadership roles in postsecondary higher education administration, consumer banking, real estate brokerage, software manufacturing, and supply chain management. As an entrepreneur and consultant, she has supported organizations in aligning mission and vision, strengthening leadership and employee development strategies, and navigating shifts driven by consumer behavior and societal change.
Committed to service and leadership beyond the academy, Dr. Critchlow is an active community advocate. As a columnist, she authored monthly articles focused on time management, reflecting her commitment to practical, applied knowledge. She firmly believes that education is most meaningful when used in service to others.
Dr. Critchlow holds a Master of Business Administration, a Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership, and a postdoctoral Master of Science in Psychology.
