In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Jessica S Garner, DNP, FNP-C, CNE is an experienced practitioner and educator. After working as a critical care nurse, she continued her education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was awarded her Master of Science in Nursing- Family Nurse Practitioner in 2014. She worked as a critical care and pulmonary nurse practitioner for several years following graduation. This position afforded her the opportunity to explore gaps in care that are apparent in today's healthcare landscape. It was with these gaps in mind that Dr. Garner chose to pursue a terminal degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Science degree in August of 2018. Her scholarly project work involved the exploration of complex issues related to transitional care windows. Dr. Garner has now transitioned into full time academia with the goal of improving the education of future practitioners. She serves as a contributing faculty member in the Walden School of Nursing.
