In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Jason Vannest has been working in the field of counseling in a variety of capacities since 2005. Dr. Vannest began his counseling career working as a clinical therapist at Catholic Charities in the impoverished area of downtown Flint, MI. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Vannest has been employed since 2007 as a school counselor working at the primary and secondary levels serving children from 4-19 years of age. Dr. Vannest is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Counselor Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, National Board Certified Counselor and Licensed School Counselor. Dr. Vannest runs a clinical supervision business with his wife Dr. Rebecca Vannest and provides supervision to Limited Licensed Professional Counselors throughout the mid-Michigan area. He is active with a number of state counselor organizations including the Michigan Mental Health Counseling Association, Michigan School Counselor Association, Michigan Counselor Association, Michigan Association for Play Therapy as well as the national level chapters of all of these same organizations. Dr. Vannest has a wife who is equally immersed in the counseling field and has a 10-year-old son, a 4-year-old son and a baby girl. Dr. Vannest has strong research interests in the area of social justice and actively publishes on the topic of racism and racial equality.
