Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

A former spokesperson for the Kansas City American Red Cross and the San Diego Girl Scouts, Dr. Patterson joined Walden in 2007, initially serving in the Center for Academic Excellence as a writing instructor and form and style editor. For the past decade, Dr. Patterson has worked directly with Walden capstone students as staff and faculty at residencies. Before transitioning to contributing faculty and University Research Reviewer in the DBA program, Jamie also worked with students at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. There she collaborated with faculty to build the National Center for Academic and Dissertation Excellence, creating strategies, curriculum, and structure for online and in-person support for doctoral students, including face-to-face and virtual residencies. Beginning in 2018, Jamie served as an instructor, as well as a chair and committee member, in the Ed.D. Higher Education and Adult Leadership program. In 2019 she transitioned to the Residency Coordinator position for the Riley College of Education and Leadership.
