Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

James completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a Computer Science minor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. After graduation he began to teach mathematics at a high school in Pennsylvania, he completed a Masters of Education degree in Mathematics, once again at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Masters degree opened up more job opportunities and he began teaching in the mathematics department at the University of Pittsburgh. James began working on his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education with a cognate in Instructional Computing and was able to complete that ten years later at the University of South Florida.
While working on his Ph.D., he had three children and many educational endeavors. He lived for a while in South Carolina and taught statistics at Lander University while taking Ph.D. courses at the University of South Carolina. James then moved to Fort Myers, Florida and taught at Edison State College for one year and then went on to the State College of Florida in Bradenton. He finally settled in and has been there for over 20 years, mostly involved with statistics. James has authored several critical thinking workbooks, calculator manuals, and a complete set of instructional videos for statistics textbooks as well as many other publishing projects in other areas of mathematics. He is presently teaching a math-based art course at the Ringling College of Art and Design that he created for the students to learn how to use mathematics to design artwork.
