In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Donna Coffey Hathorn received her PhD at Louisiana State University in December 2006. She recently retired as a tenured Associate Professor of Nursing at Southeastern Louisiana University (SELU) in the Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. She has previously taught at two other schools of nursing within the state of Louisiana. She has served as a contributing faculty member in the College of Nursing at Walden University since 2012. Throughout her teaching career she has taught in a variety of courses, which include Physical Assessment, Nursing Management, Pediatrics, Perinatal Nursing, Women's Health, Community Nursing, Perioperative, and Nursing Research and Nursing Theory. Professionally Dr. Hathorn has conducted research in the areas of neonatal axillary temperatures, back pain in farm women, masculinity among male nursing students, nurses working with student nurses in the clinical environment, second degree nursing programs, experiences of nursing students participating in a travel abroad nursing course to Honduras, the experiences of African American caregivers of family members with dementia and related disorders, perceptions of discussion boards in graduate nursing courses, and perceptions of stress in immediate post CABG patientes. Dr. Hathorn has presented at local, national and international meetings and has published several nursing research articles. Dr. Hathorn has also served in leadership positions of local chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing including past president of the Rho Zeta Chapter. Dr. Hathorn has maintained a license to practice nursing in the state of Louisiana since 1977.
