In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Derek Schroll has been a faculty member with Walden University since 2008 and has taught in a variety of programs for the Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership. Dr. Schroll currently serves as an adjunct faculty member, instructor, and dissertation mentor in the Walden’s Doctor of Education program with a specialization in Special Education. In addition, he also teaches in the College of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Studies BSECS TEMPO program. He earned Walden’s Faculty of Excellence award for the Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership in 2018.
Dr. Schroll began his career in 1998 as a special educator, initially serving students within a K–5 self-contained environment. His early impact on the field was recognized when he was named First Year Teacher of the Year for the state of North Carolina. He specialized in improving the inclusion of all his students in the general education setting.
Following this foundational period, he expanded his influence through several key roles:
- He organized, managed, planned, and implemented an after school program for students struggling to read and write in grades K-5.
- He taught a technology connections class to students in K-5.
- He started and implemented a STEM program at an elementary school and ran the STEM program for students in K-5. He also provided professional learning to all K-5 teachers to integrate STEM education in the classroom.
- Provided support for Kindergarten teachers to increase student learning and assisted with assessing students for the Kindergarten Readiness Profiles.
- Served as a early childhood special educator and K–5 after-school coordinator.
- Transitioned into a local school leadership role as a Technology Coordinator before serving as a Technology and Innovation Coach at the middle school level with a certified STEAM program.
Dr. Schroll’s practice is supported by a diverse academic background and a commitment to lifelong learning. He achieved National Board Certification and holds multiple advanced degrees, including: Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Teacher Leadership Master of Education (M.Ed.) Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education Administrative Leadership Certification.
