In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Clara Abit is a dedicated mental health nurse practitioner who is passionate about helping individuals achieve emotional well-being. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of New Hampshire in December 2023 and her master's with a specialty in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) at Walden University in February 2020.
With a rich background in mental health, Dr. Abit has worked in diverse settings, including inpatient care, emergency rooms, methadone clinics, and outpatient clinics. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, she spent five years as a registered nurse in telemetry/cardiac and behavioral health units, strengthening her expertise in both medical and psychiatric care.
In addition to clinical practice, she is an educator and contributing faculty member at Walden University. She began teaching PMHNP clinical courses in 2022 and expanded to both didactic and clinical instructor in 2024. She finds immense joy in mentoring students and helping them become skilled professionals.
Dr. Abit is especially passionate about teenage mental health, focusing on reducing stigma and deepening the understanding of suicide in this population. As an author, she has shared her insights in a recently published book on understanding teenage suicide, available on Amazon.
For Dr. Abit, mental health care is more than a profession—it’s a calling. The most rewarding part of her work is seeing her clients heal and regain stability.
