Dr. Cara Krulewitch is a certified nurse-midwife and perinatal epidemiologist and Owner and CEO, CJ Consulting Group LLC. She is the immediate past-treasurer, Board of Directors, American College of Nurse-Midwives, and is the past-president of the American Midwifery Certification Board. She is retired from the Federal Government, most recently, as Director of Women’s Health, Medical Ethics and Patient Advocacy, Health Services Policy & Oversight, Office of the Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs), Department of Defense, where she developed and oversaw policy issues pertaining to women’s health, medical ethics in the MHS, including detainee medical care, precision medicine, and patient advocacy policy, including the patient bill of rights and medical management of patients disclosing a sexual assault. Appointed by the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs), Dr. Krulewitch represented the Department as an Ex Officio member of the National Institutes of Health National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Dr. Krulewitch is currently active in academia as Contributing Faculty, Walden University, Adjunct Faculty, Maryville University and an Adjunct Associate Professor at George Washington University.
Dr. Krulewitch earned her PhD in perinatal epidemiology from the University of Maryland at Baltimore (1992); and her post-masters certificate in midwifery at SUNY-Stony Brook (1997). Dr. Krulewitch is recognized as an expert in military women’s health, nationally recognized as an expert in women’s health, intimate-partner homicide and pregnancy-related intimate-partner homicide, and homicide-suicide. She has published and presented widely on these critical issues and received a number of awards. In recognition of her achievements and contribution to her profession, she was inducted as a Fellow, American College of Nurse-Midwives in 2008 and American Academy of Nursing in 2016. Prior to joining the Department of Defense, Dr. Krulewitch served in government positions within the Department of Health and Human Services including FDA, NIH, and CDC.
