In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Alayna Thomas’ formal training is in mental health rehabilitation counseling and counselor education. Dr. Thomas is a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC) and certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC). Dr. Thomas has served as a case management specialist, outpatient therapist, and assessment coordinator while working in non-profit and private practice settings. Dr. Thomas recently moved into higher education, currently serving as a contributing faculty member in the School of Counseling at Walden University. At Walden University, she teaches master's level Assessment in Counseling and Pre-Practicum courses. Dr. Thomas' current research interests focus primarily on the differential experience of mental health disorders considering cultural factors such as race, sex, socioeconomic status etc.. She has presented at numerous conferences including the National Council on Rehabilitation Education and American Counselor Association Conference.
