Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

To be more effective, you must be more reflective. The best leaders make time for self-reflection. Find out what self-reflection is, why it’s important, and how to use self-reflection to be a great leader.
Self-reflection means taking some time to think about your thoughts, behavior, motivation, and actions. While the concept is simple, it can be surprisingly difficult to do. In our fast-paced world, we often move on to the next activity, meeting, crisis, or event without pausing to reflect on what happened earlier that day or that week.
Everyone can benefit from self-reflection. The practice gives you the opportunity to consider your reactions to people and circumstances. By taking time to reflect after a meeting, you might realize that you didn’t give someone an opportunity to speak. After realizing that, perhaps you will decide to sit down with that individual for a few minutes to hear their thoughts.
We can all also benefit from reflecting on bigger topics, such as our career, our relationships, and our life overall. Taking that time to think about these subjects can help you figure out if you’re happy or if you should make changes. Self-reflection can give you the opportunity to feel gratitude if your life is headed in a direction that makes you feel great. Or, if self-reflection reveals that you need to make changes, you could be inspired to ask for a promotion, spend more time with your loved ones, plan a vacation, or learn a new skill.
Busy leaders also need to make time for self-reflection. Here’s why:
In addition to those benefits, a 2022 study found that leaders who reflected on good leadership qualities made more progress toward their goals on the days they took time for reflection.1
If you want to start a positive habit of self-reflection, here are five steps:
