Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

In addition to its robust General Program, Walden’s online Doctor of Psychology in Behavioral Health Leadership program offers six specializations to guide you toward your Doctor of Psychology and career goals.
All Walden Doctor of Psychology students develop skills across disciplines to help them become well-rounded mental and behavioral health leaders. Regardless of specialization, they learn to manage mental health services within an integrated structure of care, and prepare to practice in a variety of work settings, including hospitals, nonprofits, healthcare agencies, social service organizations, and residential facilities. Learning to effectively plan care and communicate with professionals across career fields, Doctor of Psychology in Behavioral Health Leadership students cultivate their own business and project management skills throughout Walden’s challenging and rewarding program.
Which Doctor of Psychology specialization is right for you?
If you’re interested in not only learning about behavioral health leadership but also teaching its principles to others, the specialization in Teaching could be a great fit. Under this specialization, behavioral psychology degree students learn to train others in behavioral health through coursework in instructional design, course design, teaching techniques, and pedagogy.
With a specialization in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, students explore the inner workings of contemporary, international, and even virtual organizations. They study the behavior and dynamics of organizations while developing the entrepreneurship and advocacy skills they’ll need to help organizations deliver more effective behavioral and mental health programming and services.
In the Health Psychology specialization, students delve into the factors impacting health— biological, psychological, social, environmental, and cultural—while working toward improving health behavior. In addition, they have the opportunity to further study women’s, child and adolescent, or geriatric health in their elective coursework.
Students in the Public Health specialization gain knowledge in planning for global health initiatives such as disease prevention. Skills in marketing, communications, and public relations are developed, as well as consideration of the financial and economic workings of healthcare systems in the execution and promotion of public health programs.
In the Healthcare Management specialization, candidates build managerial and administration experience for running health services programs. Focusing on healthcare quality management, current trends and issues, and project and resource management, students build the leadership skills necessary to hold executive roles and direct effective healthcare teams.
Especially attractive to global-minded health leaders, the International Practice specialization helps train students for health management and leadership roles in international health and mental health. Students learn to understand and communicate with different cultures with confidence and sensitivity, while also increasing skills in strategic planning and global leadership and management.
An online psychology degree specialization is not mandatory. The General Program in behavioral health leadership prepares students with the leadership qualities, cross-disciplinary knowledge, and entrepreneurship and advocacy skills for a fulfilling career in behavioral health.
