Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Are you considering an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, academia’s highest clinical nursing degree? Earning a doctorate degree in nursing can help you become the type of leader the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) says is needed: “The changing demands of this nation’s complex healthcare environment require the highest level of scientific knowledge and practice expertise to assure quality patient outcomes.”1
When choosing an online DNP degree program to help you meet those challenges, you will want to look for specializations that mesh with your career goals. Walden University, the leader in doctoral nursing education,2 offers a DNP Program as well as six specializations, five of which can help academically prepare you to seek nurse practitioner certifications. These specializations can also help prepare you for some of today’s in-demand nursing careers. If you are trying to decide on a DNP specialization, this guide may give you the information you need to make that choice.
Still unsure of your DNP path? An Enrollment Specialist can discuss your options and tell you more about admission requirements. Some Walden DNP specializations offer two tracks: BSN-DNP if you’re a registered nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and MSN-DNP if you’re an RN with a Master of Science in Nursing degree.
Walden’s online DNP degree program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), with curriculum aligned to the latest standards from the AACN and National League for Nursing. And all of Walden’s online DNP specializations allow you to earn a degree while continuing to work and enjoy family life.
