Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

The field of nursing offers an array of opportunities to match every level of education. Professionals with a nursing degree—whether it’s an ADN, BSN, or MSN—work throughout the healthcare industry, providing patient care, filling administrative roles, and working on behalf of the medical industry at large.
However, with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, nurses can play an even more integral role in health care—shaping health policy as they become leaders in the industry.
Healthcare policy in the United States has had to evolve to meet the needs of a growing population that is living longer than ever thanks to advances in medicine and better access to care. Today’s nurses, with their extensive clinical experience, play a vital role in shaping this policy.
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), “DNP graduates are prepared to design, influence, and implement healthcare policies that frame healthcare financing, practice regulation, access, safety, quality, and efficacy. Moreover, the DNP graduate is able to design, implement, and advocate for healthcare policy that addresses issues of social justice and equity in healthcare. The powerful practice experiences of the DNP graduate can become potent influencers in policy formation. Additionally, the DNP graduate integrates these practice experiences with two additional skill sets: the ability to analyze the policy process and the ability to engage in politically competent action.”1
Earning a doctoral degree in nursing can give you the unique education and skills to apply a nurse’s perspective to policymaking. Nurses with a DNP degree transform healthcare and shape today’s health policy agenda in numerous ways, including:
