If you’ve decided to pursue a career in human resource management, you’ve made a wise choice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field will see steady growth (13%) until the year 2022, with salaries averaging nearly $100,000 in 2012.
To help you decide whether you should pursue a master’s in human resource management or an MBA with an HR specialization, ask yourself these questions:
If you’re absolutely certain you want to pursue human resource management as a career, a master’s in human resource management would serve you well. A human resource management degree prepares students for human resource management careers with an intense HR-focused education.
With classes that span from marketing to accounting, MBA programs provide students with a comprehensive business education. An MBA with an HR specialization enables students to choose HR electives, but the education is comprehensive, not HR focused. If you’re interested in HR but are also interested in business in general, an MBA with an HR specialization may be a good fit for you.
A master’s in human resource management sets you apart from other candidates. If you’re applying for a job within the human resource management field, a master’s in human resources will be viewed positively. If you’re applying for a business position outside the HR field, another degree may be a better option. Again, it all goes back to your career goals. A human resource management degree is ideal if you’re certain you want to work in the field. If you’re uncertain, an MBA is a better way to go.
“ Talk to your employer, like I did, when you startyour degree. My employer saw my degree as an accomplishment. Employers like to know that you can be a leader by pursuing your education and meeting the needs of the organization. ”
