In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Overton has a master’s degree in Community Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision also from the University of Northern Colorado. She is a LPC (Licensed Professional Counseling and an LAC (Licensed Addictions Counselor). She is also a Board Certified Tele Mental Health Provider (BC-TMH). Professionally, Dr. Overton has worked in a community mental health center for 15 years. She was a clinical supervisor and developed and implemented an internship program, which is thriving. She also worked in a medical hospital for 11 years in all of the units including the emergency and trauma unit. Dr. Overton started teaching in 2003 and enjoys educating and mentoring people who are entering the profession. Dr. Overton is very active in the community and volunteers for the American Red Cross. She is a mental health manager and offers instruction nationally. She had the opportunity to work as assistant mental health manager for the entire disaster response for Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She also volunteers at the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) in Winter Park, Colorado.
