Gary Burkholder

Dr. Gary J. Burkholder is on the staff of Walden University Center for Research Quality and serves as Senior Research Scholar and Senior Contributing Faculty in the School of Psychology. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, has his MA and BA degrees in Psychology, and a BS in Engineering from the University of Washington. Dr. Burkholder has served in several faculty and senior administrative roles at Walden University and other institutions. His research focus spans qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research in areas that intersect psychology and public health, including those involving exercise and diet behavior change and adherence; and predictors of substance use, sex risk, and HIV risk among youth and young adults. More recently, Dr. Burkholder’s research interests have involved retention and persistence in tertiary education and online pedagogy. He has over 20 years of experience as a face-to-face and online teacher and as a mentor to masters and doctoral dissertation students in an online environment. He is active the American Public Health Association, serves as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and serves as a reviewer for several professional journals in education, psychology, and public health. Accomplishments include mentoring over 80 doctoral and master's capstone projects and over 65 publications and 75 conference presentations, many of which have been completed with students. One of Dr. Burkholder's students was the Walden University Dissertation Award Winner in 2014 for which he received the Bernard L. Turner Award. He has also received the Outstanding Psychology Faculty Award.
