Dr. Mia Holland earned her Doctorate in Education from Florida’s Nova Southeastern University in Child and Youth Studies. Her dissertation resulted in a statewide training for juvenile justice educators in Massachusetts and earned the national honor of Outstanding Applied Dissertation. Dr. Mia Holland’s educational credentials also include an M.Ed. in Counseling from Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts, two years of additional graduate training in Clinical/Behavioral Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Dr. Holland's professional experience began in 1990 and includes work with heterogeneous populations of children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings - institutions of higher education, state social service/correctional facilities, psychiatric and residential facilities, and public-school systems. She has been teaching and leading in higher education since 2002. Her academic background includes: Contributing Faculty – Behavioral Health Leadership – Walden University (2018 – present); Visiting Assistant Professor in Psychology - Bridgewater State University (since 2002); Dissertation Chair and Adjunct Faculty – Higher Education Leadership and Special Education - Nova Southeastern University (2004 – 2015 and 2018 - present); Chairperson – Counseling Studies and Studies in Human Behavior programs at Capella University (2008 – 2017); Faculty – Counseling Studies programs at Capella University (2005-2007); Adjunct Faculty – Psychology and Developmental Reading - Bristol Community College (2002 – 2007). Dr. Holland is the co-author of the textbook titled, Insights into Child Development, a comprehensive child development textbook that integrates theory, diversity, and practice. Her curriculum-related accomplishments include the development of numerous graduate level courses and programs for various universities: Program Design and Evaluation, Scope of Addictive Behaviors and Eating Disturbances, Child and Adolescent Studies, Advanced Child and Adolescent Counseling, Counseling and Guidance with Children, Social Skills Training in Special Education, Multicultural Issues in Special Education as well as two complete graduate programs in Studies in Human Behavior (Master’s and Doctoral level). Dr. Holland is also responsible for the creation of the first web-based Special Education course for Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts which was recognized in the College’s Visiting Lecturer Spotlight in 2002. She also developed the Psychology of Eating Disorders course for Bridgewater State University and Bristol Community College. While teaching developmental reading at Bristol Community College in 2003, she established the first developmental education course to incorporate a service-learning component. As a recognized commentator in the field of eating disorders, Dr. Holland has contributed to published pieces for Today.com, NBCNews.com, MSNBC.com, iVillage Health, Yahoo!, the “Therapy Times”, and the “Baltimore Examiner”. She was an invited speaker for Harvard University Medical School on the topic of Eating Disorders and Recovery and was selected to present a TEDx talk on this topic for the inaugural TEDx event at Bridgewater State University in 2015 www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_3YDof-vGs . She also serves as a mentor for the Believe in Yourself organization emphasizing positive body image and self-esteem for young teens. Her professional interests include eating disorders, identity development, resilience, and leadership dynamics. Her personal interests include health, nutrition, and wellness. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, American Association of Behavioral Social Sciences, MultiService Eating Disorders Association, and American Fitness Training of Athletics. She is a previous Executive Board Member for the Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity and the Acushnet Library Friends Association in Massachusetts. She is a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and has completed studies in holistic wellness and nutrition. She is the developer and proprietor of Certified Nutrition and Wellness Center in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
