In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Susan Cardillo-Cunningham is a social work educator, clinician, and public sector leader with nearly 30 years of professional experience in child welfare, behavioral health, higher education, and organizational leadership. Her formal teaching and field of study center on social work practice, field education, trauma-informed care, leadership development, grief and loss, crisis intervention, and emerging applications of sport social work. She holds a Doctor of Social Work degree from Southern Connecticut State University, a Master of Social Work from Fordham University, and a Bachelor of Social Work from Sacred Heart University.
At Walden University, Dr. Cardillo-Cunningham serves as adjunct faculty dedicated to preparing future social workers through student-centered instruction, mentorship, and the integration of evidence-based and ethically grounded practice. She brings both academic and real-world leadership experience into the classroom, helping students connect theory to practice across diverse systems and communities.
