In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Samantha Mielke is a dedicated nursing professional with a current focus in the field of radiation oncology. With her professional experience starting in 2014, she has been in advanced practice roles since 2019, including currently as a Radiation Oncology Nurse Practitioner, where she collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to provide compassionate, evidence-based care for oncology patients. Dr. Mielke has also served as a Hepatobiliary Nurse Practitioner, where she managed complex pre-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing liver-related surgeries.
In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Mielke has been actively involved in nursing education. She has served as a Didactic and Clinical Nursing Instructor in the Northern Virginia Area, where she fostered students' understanding of evidence-based patient care through lectures and hands-on clinical experiences. At Walden, Dr. Mielke is dedicated to mentoring nursing students and guiding them in applying their learning to real-world healthcare scenarios, supporting their professional growth and development.
Dr. Mielke's work has emphasized the importance of collaborative, preventive care for underserved populations, and she remains passionate about reducing the cancer burden through early detection and patient education. Her affiliations include membership in the Sigma Theta Tau Honors Society of Nursing, and she has served as an invited guest speaker at the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Mielke’s notable accomplishments include developing standardized treatment procedures for radiation oncology patients, leading educational initiatives for hepatobiliary nursing staff, and being an invited speaker on healthcare topics. Through her contributions to both clinical practice and nursing education, she continues to advocate for excellence in patient care and the professional advancement of nursing students and peers.
