In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Nathan E. Popham, DSW, MBA, MSW, LCSW, earned his Doctor of Social Work from the University of Southern California, Master of Social Work from Simmons University, and Master of Business Administration from the College of William and Mary. Dr. Popham currently serves as Adjunct Faculty in the Master of Social Work program at Walden University and has been in higher education since 2025.
Professionally, Dr. Popham is a clinically focused social worker and behavioral health leader with experience across hospital, community mental health, private practice, and residential treatment settings. He is licensed as a clinical social worker in Alabama (LICSW #4618C, issued January 4, 2021) and Georgia (LCSW #CSW007489, issued February 12, 2021).
In addition to his academic role, Dr. Popham provides psychotherapy and clinical supervision to social workers pursuing licensure. His professional interests include improving access to behavioral health services, particularly for children and adolescents in rural communities, and enhancing organizational effectiveness within nonprofit and behavioral health systems.
