In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Melissa Landin is an experienced communication educator and instructional design professional with more than twenty years of teaching and industry experience. She has served as Contributing Faculty in Walden University’s undergraduate Communication program since 2009 and previously held the role of Lead Faculty for ten years, where she mentored faculty, guided curriculum development, and contributed to assessment initiatives within the College of Management and Technology.
Melissa’s academic background and teaching expertise span interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, public speaking, and mass communication. Her professional interests include adult learning, online pedagogy, learner engagement, and the design of supportive, accessible learning environments. She has extensive experience developing curriculum, leading faculty teams, and using learner data to inform instructional strategy.
Beyond her work at Walden, Melissa has built a robust career in instructional design. She has served as a Senior Instructional Designer at OptumHealth, where she led major curriculum redesign initiatives, coached instructional designers, and developed multimodal learning solutions that significantly improved learner performance and reduced attrition. She currently works as an Instructional Design Coordinator for the State of Minnesota’s Department of Human Services, designing learning experiences that support statewide provider and agency users.
Earlier in her career, Melissa taught communication courses at Inver Hills Community College, where she developed online curricula, secured grants to support instructional innovation, and co-created a certificate program focused on technology and instruction. She also founded an online faculty mentoring program to support new instructors and advance best practices in online teaching.
Throughout her career, Melissa has been recognized for her student-centered approach, her commitment to high-quality learning experiences, and her dedication to supporting both learners and colleagues.
