Dr. Maria A. Iyescas is a social work professional and educator whose field of study and teaching centers on social work, with a focus on direct practice with children and families, school social work, and youth mental health. She holds a Doctorate of Social Work from Tulane University, a Masters in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of North Texas.

Professionally, Dr. Iyescas has held leadership roles across school districts and healthcare systems, including serving as Coordinator of Mental Health Services for a large Independent School District in South Texas and as Behavioral and Mental Health Coordinator at a Children’s Hospital in South Texas. In these roles, she has supervised multidisciplinary teams, implemented large-scale mental health programs, and collaborated with community partners to expand access to services. She is an active member and leader within the National Association of Social Workers–Texas Chapter and the South Texas Social Workers Society.

Among her major accomplishments, Dr. Iyescas secured competitive grant funding, including a $1 million hospital expansion grant, developed innovative school-based mental health initiatives, and created community programs such as resource centers and outreach events to support underserved populations. Her work reflects a sustained commitment to advancing mental health services, strengthening educational systems, and preparing the next generation of social work professionals.
