In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Lisa K. Forbes received her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of Northern Colorado in 2014. She currently serves as a Contributing Faculty member in the College of Social and Behavioral Health at Walden University and began this role in January of 2025. Dr. Forbes teaches courses in the Mental Health Counseling Program. She has also taught Techniques of Counseling, Counseling Children and Adolescents, Introduction to Play Therapy, Practicum in Counseling, and Internship in Counseling at other universities. Dr. Forbes research focuses on intensive mothering practices and mental health outcomes as well as playful pedagogy and play in adulthood. She co-founded a global faculty network of over 900 faculty members called Professors at Play which is dedicated to training faculty members on playful pedagogy in adult learning as well as providing a community and support network. She has a number of presentations, keynote addresses, and publications such as articles, books, a children’s book and blogs.
